Races
Edit
The following races are native to Matré: Dragons, Demons, Elves, and Kaztin.
- Demons: 24%
- Kaztin: 25%
- Elves: 6%
- Dragons: 44%
- Other: 1%
It is important to note that Matré has a very large population. Those who have only gone to eastern Matré might be confused by these percentages because they will mostly see Demons and Kaztins. Dragons don't particularly like the cities and the portion of their population that is in the west is nearly completely dominated by Dragons and outweighs the overall percentages.
Culture
Edit
There are some cultural differences between the East and West, but there also some consistencies of their country's culture. One of which is the attitude and straightforwardness of their people. They are not afraid to say what they're thinking, whether it's nice or not.
Matrian art tends to be very expressive, loose, and colorful. Many have not strayed from the same paints and materials they have always been using. Their work - whether a painting, poem, or a story - is almost always either metaphorical or allegorical. It is very typical to have their work appear to be about one thing on the surface, but in actuality is about something else entirely.
Eastern
Edit
The eastern third of the country is more industrial and heavily influenced by Kraiss. They are primarily an external labor force for Kraiss, mostly in the production of guns because the material they use for their bullets is more available in Matré. Most of their engineers either come from Kraiss or are trained by someone who is.
The general population tends to be not very well educated, but because of their respect and interest in Kraiss, they tend to act like they are. The reality is that only a little over half of their country's citizen's can read, and most of those who can are people in the west.
Western
Edit
The rest of the country is primarily desert and desolate, with the primary population being the Dragons. They appear to be stoic and often their expressions seem unreadable, yet through their words one realizes this is not the case. They are in fact very passionate about their beliefs, and are especially interested in the preservation of their country's heritage. They often strive to do what they see is for the "better good" of nature and their people.
Although they appreciate the technology Kraiss offers and how good the factories have been on their economy, western Matrians are completely baffled by Kraissian culture. Since easterners are now trying to emulate and imitate them, the west has put forth much efforts in trying to understand them, but all have failed in vain. They simply do not understand why one would restrain their emotions, or fake sincerity and kindness just for personal gain.
In a way they are more baffled by their eastern citizens than Kraissians. While Kraissians adore their love for learning and are all well-educated, the east seems to almost reject education. Many opt out of school to start working in the factories at an earlier age, which has led to them having a lower literacy rate and very poor understanding of virtually any subject. That the east can act proud and are able to have a false confidence about the extent of their intellect is also strange to westeners. Those of west Matré tend to go to school to learn the bare basics of what they deem as fundamental for surviving in their present world, but few strive to learn further. Those that do usually seek their higher education elsewhere.

Matré and the "Forsaken Epidemic"
Edit
Since Matré started to be heavily influenced by Kraiss, they have started to have the same growing problem as Kraiss, though not to the same degree. Kraiss did not have a term for those being born without magic, but Matré decided to call them "forsaken". They were named by the eastern Dragons, who are a spiritual people and believe this is happening as punishment from the gods for abandoning their magic roots in favor of Kraiss' science and technology. They call them "forsaken" because they consider them to be literally abandoned by the gods.
It is mostly the Dragons of the east who are heavily concerned about the number of forsaken being born. Although the numbers are small in Matré compared to Kraiss, it is still growing, especially among Kaztins and in the west. Matré, unlike Kraiss, still has an attachment to their use of magic and some of their traditions - especially with competitions. Demons still prefer flying over using trains in Matré. Most forsaken children end up abandoned and only 20% will live past their twenties. Most of those who live longer are Kaztin who work in the cities, where their view of magic is growing to be continually more like Kraiss'.
